ARTIST TEXTILES Picasso to Warhol

Artist Textiles Header

Exhibition Dates: 26th January - 29th April 2018.

Open 10am-4pm (January - March) and then 10am-5pm in April.

Exhibition Information

"The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls" – Pablo Picasso

This stunning exhibition traces the history of 20th century art in textiles and vintage fashion garments with highlights including prints of work by Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.

See over 200 rare, vintage pieces displayed in the UK, outwith London, for the first time.

Artist Textiles shows how ordinary people were once able to engage with modern art in a personal and intimate way through their clothing and home furnishings. The exhibition features examples of key European and American art movements: Fauvism, Cubism, Constructivism, Abstraction, Surrealism and Pop Art; as well as the work of leading fashion designers and manufacturers.

New Lanark are delighted that Artist Textiles will be the first exhibition to open the redeveloped Exhibition Gallery in 2018.

ARTIST TEXTILES Picasso to Warhol is a touring exhibition from the Fashion and Textile Museum in London.

Exhibition Reviews

"This comprehensive and lively exhibition demonstrates the role artist-designed textiles have played in fashioning national and individual identities. By making artists’ textiles available on the mass market, ordinary people could engage with art on a more personal level and embrace the artistic and unconventional dimensions of their personality through dress. Acknowledging the power and influence of artists’ textiles in the days before social media leaves one with a new sense of the creative possibilities for engagement between artists and the public." Carey Gibbons for Apollo Magazine, 2014.

"This is a fascinating show, if only because it’s exciting to see so much beautiful work in one place. The exhibition captures a rare historical period when, on both sides of the Atlantic, the practical arts and fine art came together. Now that textiles are being mostly manufactured in Asia, that kind of symbiosis will not come again, at least not in the same way." Kathleen C.Stone for The Arts Fuse, 2015.

"A comprehensive survey of over-200 works on fabric by leading 20th-Century artists including Pablo Picasso Salvador Dali, Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, Andy Warhol and Barbra Hepworth. In the 1910s, led by painter Wyndham Lewis and the artists of Bloomsbury’s Omega Workshops, artists begun to reconsider the distinction between fine and applied art. Raoul Dufy was the first 20th-century artist to become successfully involved in producing textile designs. After the war the movement to create ‘a masterpiece in every home’ flowered with the involvement of leading contemporary artists: John Piper, Salvador Dalí, Ben Nicholson and Steinberg. Eventually, these art textiles were turned into commercial clothing: a Joan Miró dress, a Salvador Dalí tie. By the 1960s, Picasso was allowing his pictures to be printed on almost any fabric, save upholstery. The sofa was a line he wouldn’t cross, as the curators note: ‘Picassos may be leaned against, not sat on.’" TimeOut London, 2014.
